Obituaries can be a great source of information. Not only do they normally contain the date of death, but they often also include birth information, listings of family members and other intereinsting facts about the deceasent's life. Some of these obituaries were contributed before my time and do not list the date, obituary source, or contributor's information. Obituaries that were dontated as images have been transcribed as a finding aid for searches.

Please, if at all possible, cite the source and date of the publication. Not all obituaries list the year, as it is assumed by the date of the publication.

Daniel Virden Anderson, 87, Holmes Beach, died March 24, 1996.
He was born Dec. 31, 1908, in Dover, Del., and came to this area in 1971 from McLean, Va. He served 35 years as a Foreign Service officer, and retired in 1968. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, L'Alliance Francaise, the United Nations Association USA and the Island Garden Club.
Survivors include his wife, Joy V.; a daughter, Joy G. Weston of Santa Cruz, Calif.; a son, Scott V. of San Francisco; three sisters, Blanche Frey of Barrington, Ill., Amelie Sloan of Harbeson, Del., and Rose Akerman of Upperco, Md.; and six grandchildren.
Griffith-Cline Island Chapel is in charge.

Evelyn C. Argo
Evelyn C. Argo, 56, of near Houston, died Thursday, October 6, at Milford Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Her husband, James B., died in 1973. She is survived by one brother, George F. Crawford of Hockessin; and three sisters, Marion Kirk and Ethel C Quinn, both of Newark, and Helen C. Lattomus of Hockessin.
Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday morning at 11 at St. John's Catholic Church, Seabury Ave., Milford. Friends called Sunday night, October 9, at the Lofland Funeral Home, 219 S. Walnut St. Milford, where the Rosary was recited at 7. Burial was in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.

DOVER - George Gilbert Barnett of Dover died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in the Chatham Nursing Home in Chatham, Pa. He was 81.
He spent his entire life in the Dover area.
He served his country in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Barnett was a farm laborer for most of his life.
He is survived by a sister, Sara B. Taylor and a nephew, Chuck Taylor, both of Dover.
Graveside services will be private.
Arrangements by Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover.

The grim reaper, Death, has again invaded our town and made sorrowful another home. Mrs. Lina Harrington Bethards, wife of Samuel Bethards, passed quietly to rest on Tuesday morning. She had been in ill health a long time of chronic liver disease, and her death was not unexpected. She was highly respected and lived a quiet Christian life and was ready and willing for the Master's call. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, Ref. Dashiell officiating. To mourn their sad loss are the husband, the daughter, Mrs. Carried Palmer, and the sons, William Bethards, of this town, and James Bethards, of the firm of Leverage and Bethards, of Newark, N. J. Mayny beautiful floral emblems were sent by friends. The deceased was about 66 years of age. Interment was made at Barratt's Cemetery, H. F. Milten directing the funeral.

A familiar personage and a well known man has been taken from us to that bourn where no traveler has ever yet returned. Chester W. Bilderback, a well known hotel man (locally) and late proprietor of "Hotel Bilderback" at this place passed away on the 14th of this month, after a lingering illness of several weeks with a complication of diseases, and a principal one being heart trouble. He was a man of a progressive spirit and very energetic in his ideas and undertakings. Having succeeded in building and establishing his hotel here, it being the third one at this place for the accommodation of the many visitors who come here during the season. Thereby not only working for his on pecuniary benefit but enhancing the value of the other property of the place. He leaves a widow but no children to mourn his loss, also a mother, Mrs. Emma F. Coles, of Bridgeton, N. J., where he was born and raised, beside a host of friends here, as was evidenced by the large concourse of friends that followed him to his last resting place. The many readers of the "Chronicle" will remember him as the local correspondent from Bowers, to this paper and under the nom-de-plume of "Chet." His funeral was held at his late home on Sunday last. The services were conducted by Rev. H. B. Kelso, the M. E. minister of this place, and interment was made at Barratt's Cemetery.

MILFORD - Dorothy H. Brereton of Milford died Saturday, May 28, 2005, in Sunrise Assisted Living, Wilmington. She was 92.
Mrs. Brereton was born April 18, 1913, in Frederica, daughter of the late Frederick T. and Amanda Camper Harrington.
She was a waitress for the Dinner Bell Inn in Dover, retiring after 45 years with the restaurant.
Mrs. Brereton was a member of Avenue United Methodist Church, Milford.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Brereton; a sister, Clara Stradley; and three brothers, Frederick Harrington, Henry Harrington, and Walter Harrington.
She is survived by a brother, J. Saxton Harrington of Wilmington; three nieces, Virginia Connelly, Sally Rollins and Arleen Dolan; and four nephews, Howard Harrington, Allen Harrington, Jay S. Harrington and Guy Harrington, all of whom will miss her greatly.
Service will be noon Wednesday in Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.
Instead of flowers, the family requests contributions to Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St., Milford DE 19963.

BURTON
William Burton, the 20-year-old son of Benjamin Burton, of Frederica, died at the home of his father yesterday morning at an early hour from typhoid fever. Monday evening, while the nurse was in an adjoining room, the patient while delirious got out of bed, removed the screens from the window in his room, which was in the second story, and jumped to the ground below and escaped into the garden back of the dwelling., where he was found in an exhausted condition and carried back to his room. It is thought he was injured internally, the result of which hastened his death. Interment will be made in Barrett's Chapel Cemetery on Sunday.

BUTLER
Mrs. Ruth A. Butler, wife of Delos W. Butler, died at her home on East Front Street, South Milford, Delaware, on Saturday, January 30th, 1916, after a lingering illness of heart trouble. She leaves a husband and five children, three sons and two daughters. Funeral services were held at her late residence on Tuesday at eleven o'clock, interment at Barratt's Chapel, Frederica, Del.

Sarah Creadick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Creadick, died of peritonitis in the Methodist Hospital Friday morning, in her thirteenth year. Funeral services were held at her home in Lewes Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Rev. Koons, of the Methodist Episcopal Church officiated. The scholars and her Sunday School class, of the Methodist Church, attended the services in a body. The floral offering from her school teachers and comrades and Sunday School class were beautiful. The body was taken on Monday morning to Felton and thence to Barratt's Chapel, where a brief service was conducted in the chapel by the Rev. William R. Mowbray, of Milford, her former pastor. The deceased leaves to mourn her loss a father, mother, and two brothers, and a host of relatives and friends.

DECEASED. W. H. Jefferson, a prominent grain and coal dealer at New Castle, died on Wednesday afternoon, of typhoid fever. He leaves a wife and one child. He was the son of Elihu Jefferson, and comparatively a young man.

Mrs. Anne P. Massey, relict of Rev. James A. Massey and mother of Mrs. Rev. G. A. Phoebus, of Elkton, died at the residence of her son-in-law, John Phoebus, in Somerset county, Md., on Thursday night last, aged 65 years. Interment at Easton, MD.

MEREDITH
Mrs. Maggie Meredith, daughter of the late James Grier of near Frederica, died on Friday afternoon, August 2nd, 1907, aged 57 years. She had been care taker of the property of the late George S. Grier for several months. Funeral service were held at her late home on Sunday afternoon and interment made at Barratt's Chapel by Isaac A. White, funeral director.

Mrs. Mary A. Oldfield, a former resident of this town, died this week at the home of her niece, Mrs. Frank Reeves, of Atlantic City. The body was brought on for interment at Barratt's Cemetery on Wednesday. She was about 82 years of age.
QUILLEN, Armwell L. (12 May 1939)

Armwell L. Quillen, a prominent farmer of near Laws' Chapel, passed away Friday morning, May 12, 1939, at the Milford Memorial Hospital, after a few days' illness, having developed pneumonia. For many years as trustee and Sunday School superintendent of Laws' Church, he had endeared himself to that community. His sterling Christian life was always an uplift to his neighbors and friends. The last few years of his life he associated himself with the M. E. Church at Harrington, whose pastor, the Rev. Robert Green, conducted the service at his home on Sunday afternoon, assisted by the choir. A concourse of relatives and friends were present at the funeral to show their respects. He will be sadly missed by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Chambers, a sister, Mrs. Nate Jones, nephew and nieces, and many friends. Many beautiful floral emblems surrounded his casket. Interment in Barratt's Chapel cemetery.

QUILLEN
Mrs. Rachel C. Quillen, widow of the late Armwell L. Quillen, passed away quietly Wednesday morning, January 15, after a long illness, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. M. Chambers, near Laws Church. She was born April 10, 1858. The daughter of James C. and Sara C. Mitten. The mnost of her married life she had lived in the vicinity of Laws Church of which she had been a member for a great many years, having lived a beautiful Christian life and was a devoted mother and loved by all who knew her.
Mrs. Quillen is survived by an only daughter and a brother, Thos. A. Mitten of Everett, Washington, besides a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at one-thirty o'clock at the Berry Funeral Home, West Front street, Milford.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening after 7 o'clock.
Rev. David E. Wood, pastor of the Frederica Methodist Church, will officiate, assisted by Rev. W. Edwin Tull of Milford.
Interment at Barratt's Chapel.
